Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East in Heretic, plus more modern women slaying the horror game
Line of Events
Two young, religious women are drawn into a cat-and-mouse game at a strange man’s house. The music at the end is a version of "Knocking on Heavens Door" from "Fade into You" written by Mazzy Star. A nod to the fact that "Creep" A repeat of Radiohead (for the melody) is "The Air That I Breathe" author of The Hollies, previously mentioned by Grant in the film.
The Best Christmas Party Ever (2024)
At the end it says they didn’t use Generative Al to make the movie. I saw seven films at this year’s TIFF, and my vote for best picture goes to HERETIC starring Hugh Grant (who would have also voted for best actor if it were a voting category). I was really impressed when I saw him get in touch with his dark side in the HBO miniseries THE UNDOING, but here he takes it to 11, playing a friendly, religious-obsessed psychopath.
It’s a break from his schizophrenic-sized rom-com persona
Co-stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are also excellent as two Mormon missionary girls who think they’re going to call someone interested in Mormonism. However, Grant is more educated—and more questioning—about religion than expected. When they realize that he is not really interested in conversion, but rather in religious debate, they try to move away, only to find themselves trapped.
The result is refreshingly unusual
Thus begins a game of cat and mouse in which Grant tests his faith. Horror-wise, it’s solid, but it doesn’t reach the extremes of similarly claustrophobic horror films like FUNNY GAMES (the original) and SPEAK NO EVIL (the 2022 version). The only objection is that the choice of Mormonism as a religion seems a bit calculated.
In short, watch this movie if you’ve ever enjoyed a Hugh Grant movie and want to see him at the top of his game
Not since I saw Allison Janney in I TONYA in 2017 have I felt so sure about an acting Oscar nomination for a TIFF film. After the film, several people praised me for a question I asked: «Was Richard Dawkins an influence?» Co-director Bryan Woods confirmed that he did.
